About Masnooee

Independent journalism from the 26 atolls.

Masnooee covers the Maldives in English and Dhivehi. Reader-funded, no paywall on climate reporting, twelve correspondents filing from the atolls and Malé.

Our mission

Masnooee exists because the Maldives needs a newspaper that is read in every atoll, not just in Malé. We report on climate, parliament, fisheries, the rufiyaa, the courts, and the small economies of the islands. Our work is reader-funded, so the questions we ask are shaped by readers, not by advertisers or by the state. We publish in English first; every story has a Dhivehi pairing within thirty minutes.

The newsroom

We have correspondents in every populated atoll, an editor on duty around the clock, and a small in-house data desk. We work with an AI drafting assistant for source-aggregation tasks; every published story is bylined to the human correspondent who reviewed it.

Find a correspondent on the Atoll Desk — a map of who files from where.

Careers

We hire correspondents, photographers, designers, and engineers. We will train. Send us a paragraph about a story you wished someone had written, and a sample of work, to careers@masnooee.com.

Subscribe

Reader-funded means nothing on Masnooee disappears behind a paywall once a newsroom budget shifts. A subscription buys access to the full archive, the daily newsletter, and a print copy delivered every Friday in Malé (or on request to any inhabited island).

  • Digital — Rf 99 / month · request access
  • Print + Digital — Rf 220 / month · request access
  • Atoll subscription — community-rate (free) for residents of any atoll without postal delivery; reach out for a code.

Newsletters

Five newsletters, each from a different desk. All free.

  • Morning Dhiriulhun — the six stories the islands will be talking about today, by 06:30 MVT.
  • Atoll Brief — a Friday dispatch from one atoll, reported on the ground.
  • The Long View — Saturday-morning essays from our columnists. One long read, no filler.
  • Iqthisaad — the rufiyaa, the budget, the resort sector, weekly.
  • Bashi Taalu — parliament, courts, cabinet in fifteen minutes, every Thursday.

Dhivehi edition

Every story is paired with a Dhivehi version within thirty minutes of publication. Translation is led by Mariyam Thiba (Books & ideas) and a small Thaana desk. The Dhivehi reader is at /dhiriulhun.

Corrections policy
