A 1-1 draw at Real Betis on Friday handed Barcelona the chance to move 11 points clear at the top of La Liga with five games remaining.

Betis hold Madrid in stoppage time

Former Barcelona defender Héctor Bellerín struck in injury time to earn Real Betis a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid on Friday, halting the visitors' bid to cut into Barcelona's lead at the top of La Liga.

The result left Real Madrid's title challenge dented heading into the final stretch of the season.

Barcelona capitalise

Barcelona took full advantage the following day, beating Getafe to move 11 points clear of Real Madrid with five games to play, placing the club on the brink of defending their La Liga title.

The gap had stood at six points before the Betis fixture, with Real Madrid having pulled level with that margin after a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Alavés earlier in the week — a match in which Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr both scored.

Yamal sidelined

Barcelona's title run-in will proceed without Lamine Yamal, whose La Liga season has been cut short by a hamstring injury sustained while scoring a winning penalty in Barcelona's earlier win over Celta Vigo. The forward has been cleared to represent Spain at the 2026 World Cup, though his participation had initially been in doubt following the injury.
