Five proposals to extend Velana International’s single runway have been tabled since 2005. Four were rejected. The fifth, filed last month, asks the cabinet to approve a 1,200-metre extension onto reclaimed reef flat — and re-opens every one of the old arguments.

Our comparison of the five proposals, at the same scale and projection, shows a project that has grown steadily longer, wider and more expensive without resolving the question it keeps being asked: what happens to the house reef.
